Truck Accident Explosion Caused by Drunk Driver Claims the Life of Texas Man
Posted: August 23, 2011On March 28, 2011, Alejandro Raya, a fuel delivery truck driver for Petro-Chemical Transport, was fatally killed by a wrong-way drunk driver on I-30, near Fort Worth, Texas, around 2:30 a.m.
Louis Nieves, 23, the driver of the pick-up truck that crashed into the tanker, killing the 45-year-old father of three, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was taken to the Mansfield Jail. Nieves admitted to police officers that he drank 10 beers, prior to getting on the road, and was immediately charged with intoxication manslaughter.
The head-on collision caused the tanker truck to overturn and explode into flames. Trapped inside the cab compartment of the truck, Alejandro Raya died at the scene of the accident. Severe damages to the bridge over Sycamore Creek required emergency repairs to be made. The intensity of the heat caused the steel beams inside the bridge to melt, as crews from the Texas Department of Transportation frantically worked to clean up the fuel spill.
Amelia Raya, who was married to Alejandro Raya for 19 years, expressed her grief to reporters in an NBC Dallas-Fort Worth news interview. She mentions the truck accident has “destroyed her family†and that her husband was “a good father, a hard worker—very responsible.â€
The Raya family continues to grieve their loss as they try to move on with their life.
