The state of Texas ban on texting while driving was approved by the Senate and the House late on May 29, 2011. The bill includes $200 fines for those caught in the act. If signed by Governor Perry, the bill would be enacted on September 1, 2011. 

Texting while driving is distracting and dangerous. There are two current Texas laws against texting while driving. One prohibits minors to use cellular devices while driving, and the other bans cell phone use while driving in school zones. These steps forward in texting legislation have made the roads safer for all Texans, especially children. 

According to the University of Utah, driving while using a cell phone (hands on or hands free) delays a person’s reaction time as much a legally drunk drivers (.08 Blood Alcohol Content). Also, drivers that use mobile devices are four times more likely to get into serious car crashes (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
